Your complete guide to getting around Coimbra - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Coimbra

Coimbra sits at the midpoint of Portugal's main rail corridor between Lisbon and Porto, making the train your most practical long-distance connection. The city has two stations worth knowing: Coimbra-B handles intercity services (Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains), while Coimbra-A sits closer to the historic center. If you're arriving from Porto or Lisbon, your intercity train almost certainly terminates at Coimbra-B, a short shuttle service connects the two, but don't assume your ticket automatically includes it. Miss that connection and you'll be navigating an unfamiliar station on foot. Within the city, SMTUC operates the urban bus network across most neighborhoods. The lower town (Baixa) and riverside areas are flat and walkable. But the climb to the university district (Alta Universitária) is steep, the Elevador do Mercado handles that ascent and spares your legs for the cobblestones. Taxis operate throughout the city, and ride-hailing apps are available for late-night trips or areas with sparse bus coverage. Driving into the historic core is possible but rarely worth the effort: parking is scarce and the medieval street layout is not forgiving to unfamiliar drivers. On the airport question: Coimbra has no commercial airport. Most visitors fly into Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (roughly 120-130km north) or Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport (roughly 200km south), then continue by train, both are straightforward connections and keep the journey car-free. Porto is generally the faster hop. Check current train prices and schedules via the booking widget. Economy fares on both corridors are typically available, with premium options on Alfa Pendular services.

Quick Transportation Tips

Intercity trains (including services from Lisbon and Porto) stop at Coimbra-B, not the central Coimbra-A station, a short connecting train runs between the two, so factor in that transfer when planning your arrival.

Download the Bolt app before arriving, it operates in Coimbra and is generally the most convenient ride-hailing option for getting around without negotiating with taxis.

SMTUC is the municipal bus network covering the city. Loading credit onto a reusable card costs significantly less per trip than buying single paper tickets at each boarding.

The university hill (Alta) and the lower city (Baixa) involve a steep climb, use the public elevator near Largo da Portagem to save the uphill walk when heading toward the university.
